Ecommerce SEO Checklist for Indian Online Stores
A practical ecommerce SEO checklist for Indian stores: category and product pages, site structure, schema, faceted navigation and speed.
Online stores face SEO problems that blogs and service sites do not: thousands of near-identical pages, products that go out of stock and filters that create endless URLs. Use this checklist to find the biggest wins first.
1. Site structure
- Keep important pages within three clicks of the homepage: Home, Category, Subcategory, Product.
- Use clean, readable URLs such as
/mens-running-shoes/, not long parameter strings. - Add breadcrumbs so visitors and crawlers understand the hierarchy.
2. Category pages come first
Category pages usually target the most valuable searches (“cotton bedsheets”, “gaming laptops under 60000”). Give each one a unique title, a clear heading, a short helpful intro and, below the products, a few paragraphs answering buying questions. Do not leave them as a bare grid.
3. Product pages
- Write unique descriptions; manufacturer copy used by 50 other stores will not rank.
- Include size, material, delivery, return and warranty details visitors look for.
- Use several sharp, compressed images with descriptive alt text.
- Show real customer reviews and a visible price and stock status.
4. Structured data
Add Product schema with price, availability and ratings (only if the reviews are real and shown on the page), plus BreadcrumbList and Organization. This can make listings eligible for richer results.
5. Handle filters and duplicates
Filters for colour, size and price can create thousands of thin duplicate URLs. Decide which filtered pages deserve to rank (for example “black running shoes”) and make them proper pages; canonicalize or block the rest so they do not waste crawl time.
6. Out-of-stock and discontinued products
- Temporarily out of stock: keep the page, show the status and offer alternatives or a restock alert.
- Permanently gone: 301 redirect to the closest category or replacement product, not just to the homepage.
7. Speed and mobile
Most shoppers in India browse on phones, often on average connections. Compress images, limit third-party apps and test your Core Web Vitals. A one-second delay at checkout costs sales.
8. Internal linking
Link related categories and “you may also like” products, and link from buying guides to the products they discuss. Good internal links spread authority and help shoppers move along.
9. Content that supports buying
Create buying guides, comparisons and size charts that answer questions before purchase. These bring informational traffic and build trust, and they link naturally to your categories.
10. Technical basics
- HTTPS everywhere and a working XML sitemap
- A clear robots.txt that does not block product pages
- Unique titles and meta descriptions on every template
- Fix broken links and redirect chains regularly
11. Authority
Earn links from brand mentions, product reviews by bloggers, suppliers and local press, rather than buying bulk links. Read link building without spam for safe approaches.
