Core Web Vitals Explained: LCP, INP and CLS in Plain English
Core Web Vitals measure how fast and stable your pages feel. Learn what LCP, INP and CLS mean, good targets, how to test them and simple ways to improve each.
Core Web Vitals are three measurements Google uses to judge how a page feels to a real visitor: how fast the main content appears, how quickly it responds, and whether it jumps around while loading. They are part of Google’s page experience signals, and they matter just as much for conversions as for rankings.
The three metrics
LCP: Largest Contentful Paint (loading)
How long the biggest visible element, usually a hero image or main heading, takes to appear. Google’s guideline for “good” is 2.5 seconds or less.
INP: Interaction to Next Paint (responsiveness)
How quickly the page reacts when someone taps or clicks. INP replaced the older FID metric. A good score is 200 milliseconds or less.
CLS: Cumulative Layout Shift (visual stability)
How much the layout moves around unexpectedly, for example a button shifting just as you tap it. A good score is 0.1 or lower.
How to test your site
- Google Search Console: the Core Web Vitals report groups real-user data by page type.
- PageSpeed Insights: shows field data from real visitors when available, plus lab diagnostics.
- Chrome DevTools and Lighthouse: useful for debugging a single page.
Field data (real users, mostly on mobile networks in India) matters more than a perfect lab score on a fast laptop.
How to improve LCP
- Compress images and serve modern formats such as WebP
- Do not lazy-load the main hero image; give it priority instead
- Use a fast host, caching and a CDN
- Remove or defer scripts that block rendering
- Load only the font weights you actually use
How to improve INP
- Cut unused JavaScript and third-party widgets (chat, popups, trackers)
- Break up long tasks so the browser can respond
- Avoid heavy animations running on every scroll
How to improve CLS
- Set width and height on every image and video
- Reserve space for ads, banners and embeds
- Avoid inserting content above what the visitor is already reading
- Use
font-display: swapcarefully so text does not jump when fonts load
What to prioritize
Start with the pages that earn you traffic and leads, such as the homepage, top service pages and key product pages. A fast, steady page also lifts conversion rates, so it is rarely wasted effort. For the wider list of fixes, see what is technical SEO and our technical SEO service.
Remember that great vitals alone will not outrank a page that does not answer the search. They remove a handicap; they do not replace good content.
