Google Business Profile Optimization: A Step-by-Step Guide for India
Set up and optimize your Google Business Profile so nearby customers find you: categories, photos, reviews, posts and common mistakes.
For most local businesses, your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the first thing a customer sees. It is the map listing with your phone number, reviews and directions that appears when someone searches “dentist near me” or “furniture shop in Karol Bagh”. A complete, accurate profile often brings more calls than the website itself.
1. Claim and verify the right listing
Search for your business name on Google Maps first. If a listing already exists, claim it instead of creating a duplicate; duplicates split reviews and can trigger suspension. Verification is usually by video, phone or postcode card, so make sure you can show your signboard, premises or work equipment if asked.
2. Use your real business name
Use the name on your signboard and paperwork. Adding keywords such as “Best Dentist in Delhi” to the name field is against Google’s guidelines and is one of the most common reasons profiles are suspended. Put your keywords in the description and services instead.
3. Pick the primary category carefully
The primary category is one of the strongest signals for what you rank for. Choose the most specific option that describes your main service (for example “Orthodontist”, not just “Doctor”). Add secondary categories only for services you genuinely offer.
4. Keep NAP details consistent
Name, address and phone number must match your website, social profiles and directory listings letter for letter. Use a local number customers can reach during the hours you list. If you are a service-area business with no shop to visit, hide the street address and list the areas you serve.
5. Fill every section
- Description: up to 750 characters in plain language about what you do, who you serve and where.
- Hours: include holiday hours; wrong hours cause bad reviews.
- Services and products: add each with a short description and, where sensible, a price range.
- Attributes: wheelchair access, online appointments, women-led and so on.
6. Add real photos regularly
Upload your storefront, interior, team, work samples and products. Original photos taken on a phone usually outperform polished stock images because they match what customers will actually see. Add a few new photos every month.
7. Earn and answer reviews
Reviews influence both rankings and conversions. Ask happy customers right after a good experience, share your review link by WhatsApp or SMS, and reply to every review, positive or negative, in a polite and specific way. Never buy reviews or offer discounts for them; Google can remove them and penalize the profile.
8. Post updates and answer questions
Use Posts for offers, events and news, and monitor the Q&A section so wrong answers from strangers do not stay up. These do not guarantee a ranking jump, but they keep the profile fresh and useful.
9. Connect the profile to your website
Link to the most relevant landing page, not just the homepage, and make sure that page repeats your address, hours and services. Add LocalBusiness schema and an embedded map on your contact page. Our local SEO service handles all of this, and the local SEO checklist for Delhi businesses covers the wider picture.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Creating several profiles for the same location
- Using a virtual office or co-working address you do not actually operate from
- Ignoring negative reviews
- Changing the business name, category and address all at once, which can trigger re-verification
Treat the profile like a living storefront: check it monthly, keep it accurate and keep collecting honest reviews.
